2021 Tallinn

CIDOC 2021 – Symbiosis of tradition and digital technology

CIDOC 2021 was a hybrid conference on May 23-27, 2022. The conference was initially going to take place in 2021, but was postponed to May 2022 due to COVID-19 situation and government restrictions in Estonia at the time. The on-site conference was located in Estonian History Museum´s Maarjamäe History Center, Tallinn, Estonia. It was organized by the National Heritage Board of Estonia, together with CIDOC international committee and ICOM Estonia.

The theme was “Symbiosis of tradition and digital technology”. The conference followed the lead of CIDOC 2020 and went deeper in exploring the relations between tradition and digital technology. The three main subjects tackled at the conference were:

  • Strategic Planning
  • The future of documentation
  • A wonderland of digital technology

While the main topics were chosen long before the conference and were mainly focusing on seeking commonalities between museum documentation and technology, it was necessary to acknowledge the war happening in Ukraine and the direct danger to heritage at the war zones. Due to that a session concentrating on cultural heritage in crisis was added to the main programme.
